Stark Differences Persist As PA Senate Returns To Budget Talks

HARRISBURG (WSKG) - The state Senate is back in session, and is gearing up to respond to a budget package the House passed last week. Senate leaders aren't revealing much about their plans--though they indicate they have fundamental disagreements with House leaders.   Meanwhile, the standoff is prompting credit rating agencies and budget experts to put the commonwealth on their watch lists. The Senate initially passed a revenue package in July. It balanced the $2.2 billion budget deficit on a combination of borrowing and new taxes--including ones on Marcellus Shale gas drilling and utilities.

Hurricane Irma churned across the Atlantic Ocean in September 2017, battering several Caribbean islands before moving on to the Florida Keys and the U.S. mainland. As the clouds cleared over places like the Virgin Islands, the destruction became obvious even from space. These natural-color images, captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite, show some of Irma’s effect on the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. The views were acquired on August 25 and September 10, 2017, before and after the storm passed.

An Exciting Lineup This Fall on Masterpiece

See what's coming to MASTERPIECE in fall 2017, including The Collection, The Durrells in Corfu Season 2, and Poldark Season 3.

The Durrells in Corfu Season 2
Hailed by The Wall Street Journal as “an island of charm,” The Durrells in Corfu returns for a second season of eccentric family adventures on a Greek isle in the 1930s. Based on the memoirs of Gerald Durrell, the animal-loving youngest member of the clan, the series stars Keeley Hawes as the plucky widowed mother, Louisa Durrell; Josh O'Connor as her eldest son, Lawrence, who is destined to become a famous novelist; Callum Woodhouse as the hapless sportsman, Leslie; Daisy Waterstone as the lovelorn teen, Margo; and Milo Parker as Gerald. The bohemian Durrells fit right in with the light-hearted Greeks—except when they disastrously don’t. Poldark Season 3
The rip-roaring TV drama called “swoon-worthy” by the Los Angeles Times returns for the third season of action-packed episodes, starring Aidan Turner as the charismatic Ross Poldark and Eleanor Tomlinson as his remarkable partner, Demelza.

‘Seasons at the Lake’ Explores the American Vacation Through Oquaga’s Resorts

In 1869, James and Elvira Scott purchased a farmhouse and 98 acres of farmland on what was called Sand Pond in upstate New York. The two moved in and within a year began boarding visitors at their spacious lake farm house. Today, nearly 150 years later, many area families still venture to the crystal clear waters of what is now known as Oquaga Lake near the Village of Deposit and the remaining Scott's Family Resort. Seasons at the Lake is a one hour television documentary by WSKG Public Media. Filmmaker Brian Frey, looks at the remarkable history of Oquaga Lake and its resorts that drew vacationing families from every corner of the country, for decades.

Hard to Read: How American Schools Fail Kids

One in five American children has a hard time learning to read. Many of these kids have dyslexia. There are proven ways to help people with dyslexia learn, and a federal law that’s supposed to ensure that schools provide kids with help. But across the country, public schools are denying children proper treatment and often failing to identify them with dyslexia in the first place. This APM Reports documentary investigates why and explores how improving things for dyslexic kids could help all students learn to read better.
