It’s
said that any time someone writes anything they’re
writing about themselves. Michelle
Courtney Berry must find much to write about as
a poet, playwright, essayist, journalist, and in whatever
voice she
chooses. Ms. Berry is (partial listing) an actress,
singer,
motivational speaker, negotiator, Reiki Master,
a certified Critical Incident Stress Debriefer and
she’s
covered Capitol Hill and the White House. She was elected
to represent the city’s 2nd Ward on Ithaca
Common Council and is CEO of Courtney
Consulting and Counseling, which helps firms develop
wellness and stress reduction programs. And she and
her husband are parents of a six-month old daughter.
Her
first complete book of poems is “The
Month of Not Speaking”, which she also presented
in a one-woman
show at the Kitchen Theater in Ithaca. Her “Soulful
Goddess Tour” played nationwide. As a performing
poet she has appeared with fellow poets Nikki Giovanni
and Maya
Angelou and is a fellow of the Cave
Canem Poets Collective, a prestigious organization
of African-American poets. And she is Poet
Laureate of Tompkins County.
…I
want to reach beyond the ache to let loose my deep
down gospel.
I
want to hear poems from the one-room trailer or from
within the
Fancy
house in the Heights, its windows burning with light,
I
want to slow down and stare, but I worry I’ll
be accused of stalking,
Or
worse yet, coveting.
