Anarchy in the Archives

November 4, 2016 @ 9:00 am - May 19, 2017 @ 5:00 pm

“Anarchy in the Archives” explores punk’s cultural and political impact from the mid-1970s to the present day through a vast array of rare artifacts. The library’s punk collections include rare posters, flyers, fanzines, clothing, recordings and photographs of iconic performers such as the Ramones, Iggy Pop and Blondie, Patti Smith, the Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Los Crudos and more.

Punk culture, which has included music, fashion, literature and visual arts, burst out from underground theater and rock scenes in New York and London in the 1970s. It set the stage for independent music, third-wave feminist politics and musical activism. The Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections’ punk archive began in 2012, when collector and author Johan Kugelberg donated approximately 3,000 items documenting punk’s emergence.

The exhibition is on display in the Hirshland Gallery of the Carl A. Kroch Library from November 4, 2016 to May 19, 2017. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the library hours website for updates and Saturday hours: https://www.library.cornell.edu/libraries.
