BINGHAMTON, NY (WSKG) - A memorial service Tuesday night at the American Civic Association in Binghamton remembered the 13 victims of a shooting there nine years ago.
More than 50 people came to the service and joined in prayer with community faith leaders from various religions.
Valentina Bernard was six when both of her parents died in the attack. She said it’s really nice to see everyone coming together.
"They still have the passion in their hearts to be here," Bernard explained. "They don’t want to forget. Instead of forgetting, they honor this day and make it something special."
Bernard and her brother have lived with their aunt, uncle, and two kids. They were able to speak openly about their feelings, and visit their parents graves whenever.
She was in her own bubble when the shooting happened, but now she's engaged.
"I watch CNN almost every day. I see what's going on. I see the shootings. I see stuff that shouldn't be happening."
Bernard participated in the National School Walkout last month.
"It was eye opening to see how many kids actually cared about it. Many people don’t think that kids have the same mentality as a grown up, and that might be true, but we still see stuff. Many things the way you might see it," she said.
Bernard, her brother, aunt and uncle were among the family members that lit candles. After the service, food was provide and people stayed to chat and laugh together.
