Description:

The WSKG Board of Trustees Intern Position is intended to introduce the student member to the process of board governance, non-profit budget construction, and general activities of a public media company. The appointment is intended to provide the student member with an experience that will enhance his/her career and help him or her develop leadership skills that could lead to later participation as a committee chair or a board member of a non-profit organization. It provides a unique networking opportunity with community leaders from around the Twin Tier area and also provides the student member with a strong voice that will reflect the concerns of his/her generation. It is important to note that the student member will be an ex-officio, non-voting member of the Board of Trustees. This internship is intended as a learning experience as all board members operate as unpaid volunteers.

Selection Process:

The appointment is a twelve (12) month commitment that begins in August and concludes at the end of July the following year. Members of the current Board of Trustees will review all applications and select the top three candidates. These candidates will then be asked to attend in-person interviews after which the final selection will be made. The ideal applicant should be self-motivated, independent, and have a strong interest in serving their local community and developing their leadership skills. The applicant must attend the bi-monthly WSKG board meetings, which are held in Vestal, New York.

  2. Be informed about the organization's mission, strategic plan, policies, and programs.

  4. Make a serious commitment to participate actively in at least one committee of the intern’s choosing and offer to take on special assignments.
  5. Inform others about the organization.
  6. Keep up-to-date on developments in the organization's field.
  7. Follow conflict of interest and confidentiality policies.
  8. Understand the board’s annual evaluation and planning efforts.
  9. Participate in the selection of the next Board Intern.
  10. Write a Board Intern Perspective for the Trustees to review quarterly.
