BINGHAMTON, NY (WKSG) - Broome County health officials are confirming their first positive test for COVID-19.
According to Broome County Executive Jason Garnar the case is a person from an outlying county who is being treated in a Broome hospital. Local health departments are discussing who else may have been in contact with this person, but additional information is limited due to privacy law.
This comes after New York's Health Department claimed that Broome was actually hit with its first case last week. Garnar said that case should be attributed to Albany County and he asked the state to rectify it, but, as of Monday, that didn't happen. Emails to Governor Andrew Cuomo's press office were not returned.
In response to the positive test, Garnar has signed an executive order that recommends residents stay home and prohibits unnecessary travel.
The Broome County Office of Employment and Training, Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena, Broome County Forum, Broome County Clerk's Office, Broome County Public Library and Senior Centers are all closed to the public.
The Department of Motor Vehicles will remain open, but limit the capacity to ten customers at a time.
On Tuesday, Tompkins County announced its third positive test. Delaware and Tioga Counties in New York and Wayne County in Pennsylvania also have positive tests.
