Calling All Artists for a New York Memorial Honoring Puerto Rico

VESTAL, NY (WSKG) — New York is calling on artists and architects from across the state to create a proposal for a memorial honoring the victims of Hurricane Maria and the Puerto Rican community.

Hurricane Maria was a Category 4 storm that made landfall in Puerto Rico in September 2017. The storm devastated the island, decimating the power grid and killing thousands of people.

"Hurricane Maria claimed thousands of lives and destroyed countless homes in Puerto Rico, yet the resilience of the Puerto Rican community has shown the world anything can be overcome when we all stand together in solidarity," Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a press release. "We want this spirit of strength and community to be reflected in the Hurricane Maria Memorial, and we look forward to seeing how the experts capture it in their designs."

The project’s budget is $700,000. Applicants who live outside of NYC must be able to work in Battery Park where the memorial will be located.

The deadline to submit a proposal is September 9th.
