Winter Wisdom: Beauty, Resilience & Adaptability
A New Course from Mindful by Nature
There is wisdom in the stillness of the forest in winter that can lead us to an inner calm in our own mind and body when we step outdoors and listen. Teachings of resilience and adaptability are shared with us by the birds, animals and trees. Like them, we can learn to thrive, grow and even be playful in this season of long nights and short days. The lack of sunlight and feelings of being cooped up in winter is hard for many people. We hope you will join us in getting outside and letting nature help lift your spirits this winter while we explore beautiful natural areas and the stories shared with us by the land itself.
Each week we will be working with mindfulness and nature connection practices while drawing on the story of the day as it presents itself. Our pallet will include:
Animal Tracks & Sign
Natural Navigation
Winter ecology
Resilience & Adaptability
Mindful Walking
Guided Meditations
Practices of Awe & Wonder
Led by Certified Meditation Instructor and Naturalist Tim Drake and Professor of Environmental Studies and Science Jason Hamilton
Museum is open Monday through Saturday. This exhibition tells the story of the Langdon mansion, the home of one of Elmira’s most prominent and historically significant families. It features numerous period images of the interior as well as furniture, decorative objects, and works of art original to the mansion. Many pieces on loan from the Center for Mark Twain Studies have not been seen by the public for nearly 85 years.
Local produce, meats, cheeses, artisan goods, prepared foods and more.
Local history, theatre, and discovery awaits! Based on our popular fall Ghost Walk, we're moving indoors for Ghosts in the Museum: Never the 'Twain Shall Meet. Taking place over two afternoons, with nine tours each day, guests will be guided throughout the building to meet people from the past and hear their stories. These characters have a common thread, and along the way, you'll receive clues to solve a mystery. Each tour lasts about 50 minutes, is limited in number of guests, and is accessible. Actors are community members and Elmira College Theatre students. Tickets are required.
Enjoy grilled cheese, soup, chili, and desserts made by local chefs. A fundraiser for the year-round Cooperstown Farmers' Market. Live music, raffle.

Watercolor artist Ali Cavanaugh has for two decades created a significant body of work that features portraits of her children and friends. Originally trained as an oil painter, her first watercolor was created for a trade for some carpentry renovation on the family house.
Having some leftover watercolor paper from that project, Cavanaugh produced several experimental watercolor paintings. In a 2006 exhibition in Austin, Texas of her oil paintings, those three watercolors were included and created considerable interest.
Given the strength of the interest, Cavanaugh embraced the challenge of leaving oil painting behind and spent months exploring watercolor and in a short time, she found a renewed artistic voice.
Since that time, Cavanaugh has exhibited her watercolors in dozens of solo and group exhibitions and has developed a program of mentoring other artists.
Quiet Tide, her solo exhibition at the Sam and Adele Golden Gallery, features works created over the past eighteen years. Using a palette with as few as six colors, Cavanaugh creates a range of expressive conditions for each of her subjects.
The exhibition will be opening with a public reception on Saturday, October 5, 2024 between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
After the opening, the exhibition can be visited during normal operating hours: Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
