The 2024 Meta and John Spiegler Holocaust Remembrance Lecture
The 2024 Meta and John Spiegler Holocaust Remembrance Lecture
The 2024 Meta and John Spiegler Holocaust Remembrance Lecture takes place on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at 7 PM at the Corning Museum of Glass. Our speaker is Maud Dahme, who was a hidden child in the Netherlands during the Holocaust. There will be Q&A with the speaker after her presentation.
In 1942, when Maud was six, the German regime began the deportation of Jews to so-called work camps. Maud’s parents contacted Christian friends, who revealed they were part of the Resistance and had found Christian families who would hide Jewish children. Maud’s parents agreed to send Maud and her sister to such a family in a rural area to be sheltered. The girls were given new names and were instructed not to mention they were Jewish. At some point, they were in danger of being identified, and they had to move to a new family in a different village. It was a difficult time for all, as food was scarce and winters brutal.
However, Maud and her sister survived the war, as did their parents, who also were hidden by courageous Christians, and the family was reunited after liberation.
