Consumer Advocates Spotlight Products Dangerous To Children And Adults

ROCHESTER, NY (WXXI) - Judy Braiman has been releasing her list of "dangerous toys" for nearly 50 years now.

Now, the Empire State Consumer Project is warning parents about several other products that are also dangerous to children and adults.

That list includes e-cigarettes, electric scooters, adult laxatives, party plates and paper straws, and thousands of unregulated products that can be found on online.

Braiman says her top concern now is nursery furniture.

``As far as nursery furniture, the average death rate for the past three years is 99," she says.

Compare that, she says, to the average of 13 deaths annually the past three years from toys.

Braiman says the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled inclined bassinets that are a suffocation hazard, and is working on banning all sleepers that incline more than 10 percent.

She advises parents to be do their research and be a wise consumer. Recalled products and more information can be found at the Consumer Product Safety Commission's website.

Braiman says her organization is also petitioning the federal government for national standards on grease trap covers after a Rochester boy fell through a cover and died earlier this year.

Empire State Consumer Project president Judy Braiman says research shows there has been an average of 13 deaths annually from toys the past three years:

Empire State Consumer Project director Carol Chittenden says the group has big concerns about nursery furniture:
