Double Contra Dance with GeorgeMarshall and Stomp Rocket
October 12 @ 4:00 pm - 11:00 pm$12 – $25
For the last 16 years, suave New England dance caller and musician George Marshall (of renowned bands Swallowtail and Wild Asparagus) has brought fabulous musicians to Ithaca for Hands Four Dancers’ October double contra dance. This year he’s got Stomp Rocket, a hot New England band: Dave Langford of Latter Day Lizzards on fiddle, Glen Loper of Frigate and Rumblestrip on mandolin and tenor banjo, and Bethany Waickman of Anadama and the Lissa Schneckenburger Band on guitar and piano.
The afternoon session (4-6 pm) is designed to challenge experienced dancers, but the evening session, starting at 7:30 pm with a beginners’ workshop, is the ideal way to give contra a try. George Marshall has a well-deserved reputation for putting beginners at ease, walking them through each dance before the music begins, and graciously giving them confidence as the evening progresses. All are welcome to a potluck supper at 6:15 pm between the sessions. Bring a generous dish to share; there will be plates, cups, and cutlery, but bring your own if you prefer to reduce waste. There is no need to come with a dance partner, but please bring clean, soft-soled shoes to protect the floor, and comfortable clothes.
Admission is $12 HFDI members/$14 nonmembers for a single session, or $20 HFDI members/$25 nonmembers for both sessions. Children 12 and under are free. You can join Hands Four Dancers of Ithaca (a member-run nonprofit) at the dance for discounts to all our dances. More info: www.hands4dancers.org
