Eva Salina & Peter Stan: traditional Balkan Romani music

October 14 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

On Sunday, October 14, starting at 3PM, the West Kortright Centre celebrates empowered female voices in Balkan Romani (gypsy) music with a concert by Eva Salina and Peter Stan. In their collaboration, Eva Salina (vocals) & Peter Stan (accordion) pick up and continue an interrupted legacy, amplifying voices of past generations of Romani women with dynamic, intimate performances in which mournful contemplation nestles among songs of riotous joy.

Raised in the U.S. Balkan diaspora, Eva Salina is a groundbreaking interpreter of Romani songs and has been mentored by some of the greatest living Balkan musicians. Her voice moves effortlessly through the intricate and demanding expression of Romani songs. Salina’s 2010 album, Lema Lema: Eva Salina Sings Šaban Bajramovic (Vogiton Records), pays tribute to a late musician whose story is shrouded in mystery and urban legend. A passionate activist for dialogue and mutual understanding, and an advocate for women in traditional and tradition-based music, Salina works to inspire and teach young people in the Balkans and the Balkan diaspora to participate in their own living traditions. Together with Peter “Perica” Stan–a Serbian/Romanian Roma accordionist known for his playful innovation and soulful, intuitive improvisations–Eva Salina shares a commitment to keeping these songs alive and evolving with tenderness, grace, and passion.

Eva Salina & Peter Stan’s 2018 album Sudbina: A Portrait of Vida Pavlovic (Vogiton Records) is a portrait of one of Romani music’s most poignant women’s voices. Salina & Stan performed at Belgrade’s Mikser Festival 2016 with Šaban’s band Crne Mambe in a Šaban Bajramovic tribute curated by Dragi Šestic (Mostar Sevdah Reunion). Recent performances include California WorldFest, Lincoln Center’s Meet the Artist, Carnegie Hall’s Musical Explorers, Global Copenhagen, Newport Folk Festival, World Music Festival Chicago, Re:Orient Roma Festival (Stockholm), and NYC’s globalFEST 2018.

Tickets are $16 ($19 day of), $13 WKC members ($16 day of), $11 under 19. Tickets are available online until 3pm on Saturday October 13, and at the ticket booth, starting at 2PM on Sunday. There will be no outside food vendor for this show, but concertgoers are always encouraged to bring a picnic to enjoy before or after the event.
