First Friday Art Night at Museum of the Earth – Mark Oros
January 24 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pmFree
Visit the Museum of the Earth’s Gift Shop on First Friday Art Night, February 1, 2019, to see the new “Natural and Digital Patterns Photography” exhibit by Mark Oros. The Museum will be open for extended evening hours.
Mark creates photo prints on aluminum from photos of natural elements, fossils, and gemstones that have been digitally altered, including photos of gemstones that have been sliced and polished by Mark himself.
Along with being a photographer, Mark is also a lapidarist practicing his craft and art of stone cutting in the Village of Trumansburg. “Whether you are an artist, musician, designer, or craftsperson, we are only exposing the pattern, frequency, beauty, and wonder that we find concealed in the elements of cosmos.”
Starting in 1986 Mark worked on part of a National Science Foundation project that developed into what we now call the Internet. He retired from the technical community in 2000 and spent the next decade raising his triplet daughters with his wife, Heidi, on their 64-acre working farm in Trumansburg, New York. During that time, Mark’s interest in stones and fossils developed into learning how to cut gemstones–and a studio full of lapidary equipment. In 2014, Mark launched Hashnu Stones and Gems LLC, which provides lapidary materials to the international market and lapidary services to jewelers, artists, and collectors throughout the world. Mark’s real passion lies in developing and experimenting with new and revised techniques to create unique gemstone creations. You can see Mark’s current lapidary work online at hashnustones.com
Light refreshments will be served. Admission to the show in the Museum’s Gift Shop is free, special evening admission rates apply to Museum exhibits. The artwork will be on display through the end of March.
While you are there, take the opportunity to enjoy an evening at the Museum of the Earth. We have extended evening hours—the Museum will be open until 8 pm! Admission to the Museum on Friday Art Nights (from 5 to 8 pm) is only $5.00.
