Journey West – CD Release

ourney West celebrates their CD Release at the Hangar Theater on Saturday November 3rd at 8 pm
The Recording to be released is the first in a compendium and focuses on music of the middle-east. The concert features music of the middle-east represented by a nine piece ensemble including renowned musicians Dr. Timuçin Cevikoglu (Cultural Ministry of Turkey), Iraqi Imad AlTaha and Egyptian percussionist Ayman Abdalla.
Dr. Timuçin Cevikoglu is a scholar and master performer of Classical Ottoman and Sufi music, vocalist, bendir (drum) and nai player (end blown flute).
Iraqi violinist Imad AlTaha has performed for world leaders and celebrities and is known throughout the middle-east for his performances on national television broadcasts and 16 years of work in the top recording studios in Dubai.
Ayman Abdalla is an Egyptian percussionist who has performed on Cairo’s most prominent stages, including the Cairo Opera House, Sakyit El Sawy and the Citadel’s Festival. The Arab spring precipitated his relocation to the United States where he has settled in teaching the Arabic language at Colgate University.
Journey West formed in the spring of 2011 under the direction of Max Buckholtz offering in depth explorations into folkloric musical traditions which span from the Middle-East, through Eastern and Western Europe and on into the North America.
In the spring of 2016 at the height of the Syrian Refugee crisis Journey West began incorporating refugee musicians into their lineup, touring Belgium with Syrian percussionist Firas Hassan who has now participated in Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project. After the first Trump travel ban was initiated in January of 2017, Max reached out to Refugee Centers and was put in touch with Imad AtTaha who has been performing with the group since the spring of 2017.
The performance includes a reception which will include near-eastern food.
