The Art of Rhythm with Blake Fleming

Join author/drummer/educator, Blake Fleming, for The Art of Rhythm, a fun-filled, eye-opening, and educational workshop on unlocking the expressive and healing power of rhythm through simple concepts, improvisations and beyond.

$40/WKC Member; $45/non-member; preregistration required. All ages & levels of experience.

Fresh off the heels of publishing his first book, the internationally acclaimed and unprecedented The Book of Rhythm, as well as recent live performances with legendary Ornette Coleman bassist, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, recent studio work with Sean Ono Lennon, and a string of performances with his own trio, Fleming offers insight into music, rhythm and improvisation that knows no musical boundaries. He will concentrate on the universal language of rhythm, in terms that can be understood by any and all levels of experience and ability.

Participants are encouraged to bring their instruments of any kind or whatever sound makers they want. This will be a loose and fun drum circle vibe but with any and all instruments, conducted via the drum set by Blake. There will be some basic percussion instruments and drumsticks available as well.


Blake Fleming is a percussionist known for his involvement with several influential experimental bands and has recently written his first book, The Book of Rhythm, an unprecedented collection of 5,096 meticulously organized rhythms for all instruments. His drumming has been written about in major publications such as The New York Times, NPR, Spin, Rolling Stone, MOJO, Modern Drummer, DRUM!, Pitchfork, Stereogum and Alternative Press. Blake was included in’s 100 Greatest Drummers of Alternative Music. He has performed on over 60 albums to date and has toured the U.S., Canada, Europe and the U.K. extensively. His performances have ranged from sold-out arena tours with the Mars Volta opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers to performing solo with Olympic synchronized swimmers to performing on the BBC to creating soundtracks for video installations in museums worldwide. Blake is currently teaching students worldwide via Skype, performing, and doing studio sessions. He has been Adjunct Lecturer and Drum Instructor at SUNY Oneonta since 2008.
