KEYSTONE CROSSROADS -- Any debate over the tax-credit programs that subsidize private-school education in Pennsylvania could begin here:
There is very little public data on the students who benefit. Backers often say that scholarship money raised through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) goes to poor families who'd be "trapped" in "failing" public schools if they didn't have tuition assistance.
HARRISBURG, PA (WSKG) -- The state Senate voted Wednesday to repeal a small cash assistance program for the poor--but before it happened, the session devolved into a loud, chaotic argument that leaders say briefly derailed ongoing budget negotiations, and which many members called the worst in their memory. The bill at issue--which scuttled General Assistance for the second time since 2012--was designed by Republicans to tie Democratic Governor Tom Wolf's hands.
HARRISBURG, PA (WSKG) -- Lawmakers are on track to give Democratic Governor Tom Wolf even more money than he asked for to fund voting machine improvements. However, it will come with conditions.
ALBANY, NY (WSKG) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo is on his way to Israel to carry out what he said is an economic mission. But Cuomo said the trip also has a personal focus.
Cuomo said he'll meet with business leaders at Technion University about four key industries -- tech startups, innovations in drones and medical technology, and navigation devices that are being developed for uses like self-driving cars.
A Metropolitan Transportation Authority official is also on the trip to see if the navigation techniques can be used to replace the aging signal system on New York City's subways and on commuter rail lines.
The governor said Israel is a major trading partner with New York state, with New York exporting $5 billion worth of goods to Israel, and importing $8 billion worth of products.
Walmart is expanding a program that allows for online orders of groceries to be picked up and paid for with food stamps at more than 2,500 locations. It's the latest move by a major retailer to give low-income shoppers more options for using food stamps in the modern era of online shopping.
