Trade Unwanted Guns For Groceries

If you have working firearms you don't want anymore, you can turn them in on Saturday and receive a grocery voucher.

"We’re not going to ask you any questions—where did you get the gun? Why do you still have the gun?—whatever. We just want to help you feel safe in your home," said Martha Wolfe, the receptionist at the American Civic Association, which is running the exchange.

The ACA is offering $50 gift certificates for rifles and shotguns; $100 for handguns and assault-style weapons.

"For people who... are maybe not sure of how to dispose of it or are uncomfortable disposing of it, this is just an opportunity to bring that gun here," said Wolfe. "The sheriff's department will take care of melting it down, and you can be reimbursed for that."

In addition to the sheriff's department, the ACA is also working with Veterans for Peace.

The ACA was the site of a mass shooting in April 2009 that left 13 people dead and 4 wounded.

You can turn in working firearms to the American Civic Association on Front Street in Binghamton 9:00am-12:00pm on Saturday, May 12.
