Simeon Benjamin was born on Long Island in 1792. The son of a farmer, Benjamin opened his first business in 1812 and within a few years acquired a substantial amount of wealth. In 1835, Benjamin moved to Elmira, New York and began investing his fortune in the growing community. One of Benjamin’s most substantial investments was in Elmira College.
