In 1786, William Cooper traveled from his home in New Jersey and founded a settlement at the southern end of Otsego Lake. Cooper had purchased 10,000 acres of land near the lake, and within weeks he had sold all the property to eager farmers and settlers. Initially known as the Village of Otsego, in 1812 it was renamed Cooperstown in honor of its founder.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzRo_X9_qsQFunding provided by a grant from Empire State Development.
