In 1923, a group of local citizens banded together to collect, preserve, and promote the history of Chemung County. Chartered by the state in 1947, today the Chemung County Historical Society continues its mission to deepen the community’s understanding of the past and the role that history plays in our future.
In and effort to fulfill its mission, the society operates the Chemung Valley History Museum in the heart of the City of Elmira. Located in a converted historic industrial building, the museum contains impressive permanent exhibits on Chemung County and Elmira’s history, and additionally offers an impressive rotating exhibit schedule. The historical society also operates Booth Library, located on the second floor of the museum, a premier research facility with thousands of documents, maps, photographs and other items available to researchers.
The Chemung Valley History Museum in Elmira offers visitors an important window into the past and is another required stop on New York’s Path Through History.
