Prior to the Civil War, the numerous railroads, rivers, and canals that crisscrossed Upstate New York made the area an important corridor on the Underground Railroad. Thousands of runaway slaves followed this clandestine network to freedom in Canada. In Owego, New York many of these fugitive slaves found refuge in the home of Hammon D. Pinney.
