Jedediah Hotchkiss was a Windsor, New York native and a graduate of Windsor Academy. He was constantly curious about the natural world and developed a keen interest in geography and geology. At the age of 19, Hotchkiss moved to the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia and became a teacher. In his spare time Hotchkiss taught himself how to make maps. During the Civil War. he would become one of the conflict’s most famous mapmakers.
