UNFORTUNATELY, WE HAVE REACHED CAPACITY at our preview screening of MERCY STREET on January 7th at 6PM at WSKG Studios in Vestal.

However, you can still watch the show’s premiere January 17, at 10PM on WSKG TV.

Based on true stories, MERCY STREET takes viewers beyond the battlefield and into the lives of a distinctive cast of characters — doctors, nurses, contraband laborers and Southern loyalists — realizing the chaotic world of Union-occupied Alexandria, Virginia, and the Mansion House Hospital in the early years of the Civil War.

Set in Virginia in the spring of 1862, MERCY STREET follows the lives of two volunteer nurses on opposite sides of the conflict; MARY PHINNEY, (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a staunch New England abolitionist, and EMMA GREEN, (Hannah James), a naive young Confederate belle. The two collide at Mansion House, the Green family’s luxury hotel that has been taken over and transformed into a Union Army Hospital in Alexandria, a border town between North and South and the longest-occupied Confederate city of the war. Ruled under martial law, Alexandria is now the melting pot of the region, filled with soldiers, civilians, female volunteers, doctors, wounded fighting men from both sides, runaway slaves, prostitutes, speculators and spies.

The intersection of North and South within the confines of a small occupied town creates a rich world that is chaotic, conflicted, corrupt, dynamic and even hopeful — a cauldron within which these characters strive, fight, love, laugh, betray, sacrifice and, at times, act like scoundrels. This series is not about battles and glory, it’s about the drama and unexpected humor of everyday life behind the front lines. It’s a fresh twist on an iconic story, one that resonates with larger themes we still struggle with today.

Mercy Street premieres January 17, 2016 at 10PM on WSKG TV.

  1. In offering a preview at Vestal facilities, you fail to realize the total area that your airing covers, or the fact that most of us are a very far distance from Vestal. If you are going to offer previews in this way; you are essentially ignoring this important point regarding how far away so many of us are and how ridiculous it would be to drive such a distance for a 1 hour airing. I am over 2 hours from Vestal and yet I would be most interested in seeing a show preview. However, I can’t possible drive the distance. In my opinion, this approach you are taking, which clearly excludes most of your viewing area; because the truth is that it is far reaching, is rather rude and dismissive of the rest of us. I would understand if this was your only option, however, the truth is that you have the technology to offer us the same previews without a 4 hour drive expectation; which you should also realize would require a high use of fuel on the part of so many. Lastly, I came to this site in response to the Downton Abbey request for support. However, your website is not matching ANY OF THE CLAIMED programs being aired wherein you have 3 general categories of donations which all combine and involve a season six response gift depending upon the donation category. I was particularly interested in the middle $240 donation package but it and all the others are no where to be found here.

    • Hi Ariel. Thank you for your feedback! In regards to the location of the screening: As you might imagine, with limited staff it is easiest (and most affordable) for us to host previews in our own facility. However, we do realize many WSKG viewers and listeners live far enough from our Vestal studios that the drive is prohibitive. We strive to include other cities in our event planning when possible; for example the Downton Abbey Season Six preview was held in Ithaca, as well as Binghamton. We welcome suggestions of organizations and facilities to partner with in a city near you! In regards to your difficulty with the donation: I’m sorry you had trouble with the donation page — support from viewers like you is critical to WSKG and we do our best to make it as easy as possible. When you click on the red Donate button on WSKG.org, it should take you to our donation page where you can specify the amount you’d like to contribute by clicking on “other” under the heading of Donation Amount. From the thank you gift drop-down list you will find an option for $240 for all six seasons of Downton Abbey on either Blu-Ray or DVD. But we’d be happy to take care of that for you by phone if you will provide us with a phone number and a good time to call you. Or you can call our Membership Manager Shannon at 607-729-0100 ext 334 when it’s convenient for you.
