House Ethics Committee Begins Probe Into Reed Misconduct Allegations

BINGHAMTON, NY (WSKG) — The House Ethics Committee has begun an investigation into alleged sexual misconduct by Republican Rep. Tom Reed (NY-23).

Committee members released a statement Friday confirming the investigation into the Southern Tier congressman’s alleged actions to determine if they violate House Rules, laws and standards of conduct.

Last month, the Washington Post reported that Nicolette Davis, a former lobbyist, was at a bar with Reed after a work-related fishing trip in 2017 when he rubbed her shoulders and unhooked her bra while drunk.

“The Committee notes that the mere fact that it is investigating these allegations, and publicly disclosing its review, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the Committee,” a statement from the House Ethics Committee read. “No other public comment will be made on this matter except in accordance with Committee rules.”

Reed, who said he was struggling with alcoholism at the time of the encounter with Davis, issued a public apology last month. In it, he said he would not seek election for any office after the end of his current House term as a result of the claims. That included a bid for governor, which Reed previously told reporters he was considering.

“In reflection, my personal depiction of this event is irrelevant,” Reed stated. “Simply put, my behavior caused her pain, showed her disrespect and was unprofessional. I was wrong, I am sorry, and I take full responsibility.”

Reed has been quiet on social media since the issuing the apology and has not yet released a statement regarding the House's investigation.

The House Ethics Committee also announced Friday that it is opening a probe into Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, who is accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old and possible sex trafficking. The Department of Justice is already investigating the claims against Gaetz.
