How Do Your Daily Habits Compare To The Average New Yorker?

ROCHESTER, NY (WXXI) - A new poll from Siena College glimpses into the lives of New Yorkers for a look at their daily habits.  It paints a picture of a sleep deprived population attached to its digital devices.

The survey found that only twenty four percent of adults get eight or more hours of sleep a night.  Forty eight percent logged no more than six hours.

Nearly sixty percent of New Yorkers claim they check their email, text messages, or social media accounts within the first hour of waking up. Less than a third get the recommended 30 minutes of daily exercise and 15 percent never floss their teeth.

"On a positive note, though, we asked a very simple question,” said Siena Research Institute director Don Levy. “How often to you laugh out loud? Do you give yourself an opportunity to get a belly laugh and feel good? Seventy percent of us say each and every day; something strikes us so funny that we do laugh out loud."

And, according to the Siena poll, New Yorkers are altruistic. Sixty percent say they do something nice for another person at least once a day. "It could be a smile; it could be letting them into traffic; it could be lending a helping hand,' " said Levy.
