National Soccer Hall Of Fame To Induct Abby Wambach

ROCHESTER, NY (WXXI) - You can add one more honor to soccer star and Pittsford native Abby Wambach’s resume. Later this year, Wambach will be inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

The announcement was made Saturday, by another Hall of Famer, Julie Foudy.

Although Wambach genuinely seemed surprised when Foudy gave her the news, it’s not hard to understand why she is being inducted. Wambach is the all-time leading scorer in international soccer with 184 goals. The 38 year old Mercy High School grad played in four World Cups and two Olympic Games.

Wambach is also a six-time winner of the U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year award. She retired from soccer in 2015 and is currently an author, activist and motivational speaker.

Wambach will be inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame on September 21 in Texas.

Wambach is the all-time leading scorer in women’s international soccer, featuring in four World Cups, including one she won in 2015, and two Olympic Games among her 255 international appearances for the US women’s national team from 2001 to 2015.
