New Poll Shows New Yorkers Strongly Favor Tax Cap, Plastic Bag Ban

ROCHESTER, NY (WXXI) - New Yorkers have mixed reviews on the new state budget, according to the latest Siena Poll.

Pollster Steve Greenberg says 39 percent of New Yorkers believe the budget will be good for New York, while 35 percent think it will be bad for the state.

But, when it comes to some specific laws passed in the spending plan, there wasn't as much conflicting opinion among those polled.

“Making the 2 percent property tax cap permanent, overwhelmingly, 64 to 22 percent of New Yorkers think it will be good for the state,” Greenberg said. “Banning the single use plastic bag, again, overwhelmingly by a 62 to 33 percent margin, voters think that will be good for New York." he said.

Greenberg says there's also strong support for eliminating bail for misdemeanors and non-violent felonies, but a clear majority give a thumbs down to the law banning the release of mug shots by police.

He also says voters gave mixed reviews on congestion pricing for driving in New York City and requiring online retailers to collect sales tax.

Greenberg says voters also weighed in on issues that may come up in the last month of the legislative session. That includes overwhelming support for requiring parents to have their children vaccinated for certain diseases; legalizing marijuana has support, but not strong support among those polled.

The poll was conducted April 8-11 by telephone to 735 registered voters in New York.  It has an overall margin of error of 4.1 percent.
