VESTAL, NY (WSKG) — The New York Department of Environmental Conservation said it will fight a decision by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that allows construction of a natural gas pipeline in the state.
"The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) disagrees with FERC's decision that, once again, sides with the fossil fuel industry over protecting our environment," a DEC spokesperson wrote in an email to WSKG. "DEC will continue to vigorously defend our decision and our authority to protect New York State’s water quality resources."
The DEC had previously denied the project a water quality permit.
The Constitution pipeline, run by the Tulsa-based company Williams, would stretch 125-miles from northern Pennsylvania to New York's Schoharie county, passing through Broome, Chenango, and Delaware counties.
On the company's website, they write the pipeline has "a capacity to transport 650,000 dekatherms of natural gas per day (enough natural gas to serve about 3 million homes) from the Marcellus Shale."
