New York Metropolitan Opera Extends 2020-21 Broadcast Season, Takes February Off

For the first time in recent decades, the Met season will extend into June and will include no performances in February. The season will feature 23 operas including two Met premieres, Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel and Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking. There are three additional new productions, Aida, Die Zauberflöte, and Don Giovanni, and 18 revivals in the season.

The 90th consecutive Saturday Matinee Radio Broadcast Season will begin on December 5, 2020, with Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel, featuring Svetlana Sozdateleva and Evgeny Nikitin, conducted by Michail Jurowski and will run for twenty-seven consecutive Saturdays.

The radio season closes on June 5, 2021 with Britten’s Billy Budd, starring Matthew Polenzani, Joshua Hopkins and Matthew Rose, conducted by Simone Young.

The Met’s Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts six productions, including new productions of Aida, starring Anna Netrebko, Anita Rachvelishvilli and Piotr Beczala; Don Giovanni, with Ailyn Pérez, Isabel Leonard, and Peter Mattei; and Dead Man Walking, starring Joyce DiDonato, Susan Graham, and Etienne Dupuis. Nézet-Séguin also leads revivals of Fidelio, Roméo et Juliette, and Die Frau ohne Schatten.

During the month of February we will present a special series of iconic Met broadcasts from our archives -- chosen by our radio audience. Our listeners will have the chance to vote on their favorite broadcasts from the past and we will present the winning programs on the air. All of our radio listeners will be invited to participate in selecting this special February line-up of legendary Met performances. Details for the voting will be announced in April.
