New York State Trooper Killed Near Corning

VESTAL, NY (WSKG) - A New York state trooper was killed Monday, responding to a domestic call in the Town of Erwin, Steuben County.

According to state police, at about 3:30 A.M., members of the state police, Corning police, and the Steuben County sheriff's department responded to a call of a suicidal man who had barricaded himself in his home. The man, Steven Kiley, shot and killed state trooper Nicholas Clark, 29. Kiley was later found dead in the home, too, of an apparent gunshot wound, according to the state police.

Speaking at a press conference in Painted Post, NYSP First Deputy Superintendent Chris Fiore said troopers and Steuben County Sheriff's deputies had brought in crisis negotiators, but could not make contact.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo stood alongside the troopers at the press conference and said a deputy sheriff pulled Clark away after he was shot.

"A situation like this makes no sense," said Cuomo. "A 29-year-old with his whole life ahead of him, was just trying to help and do good things."

"This is a terrible loss," said Fiore. "Prayers are with Trooper Clark and his family."

Clark lived in Troupsburg in Steuben County and is survived by his mother, father and brother.

This is the second New York state trooper killed in response to a domestic call in just under a year. According to the Associated Press, Joel Davis, 36, was fatally shot July 9, 2017, in northern New York by an Army soldier as he responded to reports of gunfire at the soldier’s home near Fort Drum. The soldier also killed his wife and wounded another woman before surrendering to troopers.
