Red Cross Operating Shelters In Finger Lakes For People Impacted By Flooding

ROCHESTER, NY (WXXI) - Volunteers from the American Red Cross are operating several shelters for residents affected by the ongoing flooding in the Finger Lakes.

"Where individuals can take refuge, take shelter and get out of the high water, and we'll see what happens when the next round of rain comes through," said Brian McConnell, Executive Director of the Finger Lakes Chapter.

The Watkins Glen High School Fieldhouse, Harpursville Baptist Church and Ovid Federated Church are all open for those in need.

Residents are welcome to stay or stop by the facilities, as volunteers are providing food, water and support.

McConnell says families should always have a disaster plan and kit in place for times like these.

"Preferably a smaller kit for their vehicle or if they’re at work in the event that they can’t get home," said McConnell. "Preparedness is a big piece of it."

The Finger Lakes Red Cross chapter covers six counties, McConnell says, and five have been in touch over the last 48 hours due to flash flooding.
