New York Senate Votes Unanimously To Ban Finger Lakes Trash Incinerator

ITHACA, NY (WSKG) - The New York State Senate voted unanimously to pass the bill, called the Finger Lakes Community Preservation Act. It is the latest step in efforts to block the construction of the trash incinerator in the town of Romulus. It now goes to the governor for his signature.

The town is near Seneca Lake which is the largest of the Finger Lakes.

The bill would ban new construction of trash incinerators within 10 miles of a body of water defined by the state as an important source of drinking water, a key to tourism or vulnerable to harmful algal blooms. Seneca Lake fits all of those criteria.

Municipalities throughout the region have passed resolutions opposing the incinerator, among them Tompkins, Cayuga and Ontario Counties. The bill had strong bipartisan support.

New York Governor Cuomo announced his opposition to the incinerator last year.
