Gillibrand, Grassley Call For More Transparency About College Sexual Assault

ITHACA, NY (WSKG) - New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa have re-introduced a bill that would change the way colleges and universities handle sexual assaults that occur on their campuses.

In her announcement, Gillibrand described sexual assaults on college campuses is “pervasive”. The legislation would require all schools to follow the same disciplinary process, regularly make public confidential student surveys about sexual assaults, and create large financial penalties for schools that violate the new requirements.

The bill has wide bipartisan support.

A Cornell report says 3oo complaints of sexual assault or misconduct on campus were made during the 2016-2017 school year. WSKG requested statistics for last school year but were told no one was able to provide them at this time.
