Tompkins Sheriff's Dept. Increases Patrol Of Newfield Schools After Threat Found in Bathroom

web

BINGHAMTON, NY (WSKG) - Police increased patrol of Newfield schools in Tompkins County this week after a threat of violence was found written in a bathroom stall of one of the schools.

In a message to parents on Tuesday, Superintendent Cheryl Thomas stated the school gets threats regularly but most are not credible. However, in this instance, she wrote “we take all threats seriously and are working with law enforcement to investigate.”

On Thursday, Thomas sent a second message to parents saying the school would be increasing police presence Friday in response to student concerns.

The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department says they are not conducting an investigation but the school is.

"The school has been in contact with the Sheriff’s office to have added patrols throughout the week, which we are currently doing for them," said Lt. Kyle Koskinen said.

On Facebook, parents expressed frustration at not having more details from the school district about the exact nature of the threat.

The superintendent has not responded to WSKG’s request for an interview.
