Broome DA Formally Announces NY-22 Run

VESTAL, NY (WSKG) - Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell is officially running for congress in New York’s 22nd congressional district.

The Republican made the announcement on Tuesday in Binghamton.

Cornwell has served as district attorney since 2015. He boasted about how he has handled the opioid crisis. Overall, the county has seen a drop in overdose deaths over the last few years.

Meanwhile, he called himself an outsider and said there has been inaction on major issues in Washington. “There’s a humanitarian crisis at the border that nobody can deny and there’s no action," Cornwell said. "They’re running things. Fix it."

Cornwell said he will soon release his specific plans for a variety of issues. He enters a Republican primary with two other candidates already: George Phillips and Franklin Sager.

The winner of the nomination will take on freshman Democrat Anthony Brindisi in 2020. Speaking in Endwell on Monday, Brindisi push aside 2020 talk. "I'm focused on governing right now," he said.

New York's 22nd District stretches from Lake Ontario to the Pennsylvania border including Binghamton, Cortland and Utica.
