Battisti Wins GOP Primary For Broome DA

VESTAL, NY (WSKG) -- Paul Battisti is the Republican nominee for Broome County District Attorney.

Absentee ballots in the race were counted on Monday. Battisti finished with 173 more votes than his opponent, Chief Assistant District Attorney Mike Korchak.  Battisti led by 137 after the June 25 primary.

"I'm humbled to have prevailed in the Primary Election for District Attorney following today's careful count of Absentee and Affidavit Ballots at the Board of Elections," Battisti said in a statement. "It's an honor to have earned the trust of the Republican Primary voters - but there is much more work to be done as we plan ahead for the upcoming November General Election."

Battisti also thanked Korchak for a "spirited" run. This comes after a campaign that, at times, featured attacks on the candidates and their supporters.

Battisti moves on to face Democrat Debra Gelson in November's general election. The winner replaces Steve Cornwell, who's been in office since 2015. Cornwell decided not to seek reelection and announced his candidacy for Congress last week.
