ROCHESTER, NY (WXXI) - If your favorite food group is deep-fried, then the New York State Fair doesn’t disappoint. Make your way to the Fried Specialties booth, and you’ll be transported to a deep-fried fantasy that would stop the heart of a cardiologist.
This is the booth that created culinary concoctions like The Defibrillator (a burger with deep-fried pickles, cheese curds, bacon and cheddar cheese, sandwiched between two grilled cheese sandwiches as buns), the New York Harvester (turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cheese and cranberry sauce on sourdough bread, deep-fried, with gravy for dipping), and the item that was voted last year’s favorite new crazy food at the fair – The Heart Attack (two Hofmann hot dogs stuffed with chili, cheddar cheese and a pickle, wrapped in bacon, deep-fried, and drizzled with chocolate sauce).
What could top all of these?
Sudden Death. The newest creation is two hamburgers, stuffed with macaroni and cheese, pork belly, and jalapeños, wrapped in a basket of bacon strips, and – yes – it’s deep-fried.
If a burger would be easier on your heart, they’ll have a new Breakfast Burger, a half-pound slab of ground beef covered in sausage, bacon, ham, eggs, and hash browns.
If you want something lighter … they’ll have deep-fried banana bread, which is also new this year.
The New York State Fair runs from Aug. 21 through Sept. 2, about the same amount of time you’ll need to run to burn off the calories from eating these creations.
