NY Candidates Can Soon Use Campaign Funds for Childcare

VESTAL, NY (WSKG) — Candidates running for public office in New York can soon use campaign funds for child care.

Governor Cuomo said the new law will allow more women to run for public office. He signed the legislation Tuesday, amending state election law.

With the amendment, campaign funds can be used to pay for childcare expenses while running and after being elected.

Last year, the Federal Election ruled unanimously in favor of a woman seeking a seat in New York's House of Representatives. Candidates cannot use campaign money for "personal use", but Liuba Grechen Shirley argued that she needed more child care because she was running for office.

New York has more women in legislative positions than the national average, but has never elected female governor.

The bill takes effect in 60 days.
