VESTAL, NY (WSKG) — Whey Street Dairy in Cortland County, New York, received the 2019 State Agricultural Environmental Management Award.
New York gives the award each year, honoring farms’ efforts to protect the environment.
Whey Street Dairy’s efforts include conservation tillage practices, cover crops, and petroleum spill prevention. The measures are meant to protect soil and water along the Tioughnioga River.
The fourth-generation farm is owned by Martin and Mary Ann Young. They sell milk to Dairy Farmers of America, which delivers to companies such as Hood and Chobani.
Amanda Barber, who's the county’s Soil and Water Conservation district manager, said, “The Youngs are motivated by their own ideals to manage their farm in an environmentally sensitive manner. They have been dedicated and committed leaders.”
