Assemblywoman Questions NYSEG Rate Increases

VESTAL, NY (WSKG) - Binghamton-area Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo is concerned over proposed NYSEG rate increases.

"This is particularly worrisome for customers with low and fixed incomes, as well as small businesses," Lupardo said in a statement.

The comments came amid statewide Public Service Commission meetings on the proposed increases. That includes meetings this week in Binghamton and Ithaca.

NYSEG, which provides service to 40 percent of upstate residents, wants to raise electricity rates by about $11-per-month and gas by just over $1-per-month. According to the company, the increase is needed to manage overgrown trees and areas affected by storms over the last several years. It also said it wants to invest in improvements to make the system more reliable.

The proposal would go into effect next April.
