ITHACA, NY (WSKG) - A sewage release from the Cayuga Heights Wastewater Treatment Plant in Tompkins County occurred this week. The county health department wants people in the area to be cautious.
The release happened on Wednesday night and was stopped by 3:30AM.
About 1,000 gallons of liquid were released from the sludge digesters into a ditch. The Tompkins Health Department says there’s no evidence it has entered Cayuga Lake. Cayuga Heights is working with the state DEC to clean up the ditch where it occurred.
The liquid is called supernatant. It is the liquid that settles above solids in an anaerobic digester.
The county wants anyone who might drink untreated water or who swims in the lake to be aware of the discharge.
