State Incentive Program Rewards Broome County's Cost Cutting Efforts

VESTAL, NY (WSKG) —The state is rewarding Broome County for cutting costs. The county enacted efficiencies that save taxpayers over three-million dollars. So, as a reward, New York State program will give Broome County another three-point-one million dollars.

Much of the money was saved when the county joined a purchasing group. County Executive Jason Garner says they negotiated lower prices for prescription drugs. The county also shared the cost of case workers with school district. Garner promises they’ll invest the grant money wisely.

“We certainly want to provide tax relief. We definitely—the first thing we were looking at was paying off debt and looking at different infrastructure projects we could put the money into,” said Garner.

Garner says Broome County is also working with local police departments on saving money. For example, he says all arraignments will be managed from a central location.
