VESTAL, NY (WSKG) - An accident involving a tractor trailer carrying hazardous materials prompted a mandatory evacuation for the Town of Fenton in Broome County, on Monday. According to the Broome County Sheriff on Facebook, the driver was thrown from the vehicle after hitting two deer and killed.
The accident prompted Broome County to issue a State of Emergency. It occurred about 1:00 A.M. Monday. According to Governor Andrew Cuomo's office, the truck was carrying compressed natural gas. The mandatory evacuation affected any one living within a quarter mile of Exit 2 on Interstate-88. Residents were sent to fire stations in Port Crane and Hillcrest.
As of Monday evening, the mandatory evacuation was lifted and Interstate-88 reopened.
New York State sent emergency personnel to the area to assist in the clean-up and warn motorists of closures around the scene the of the accident.*
