Battisti Endorsed By The New York State Troopers Union

Battisti PBA Endorsement - spot

VESTAL, NY (WSKG) - Republican Paul Battisti has received the endorsement of a state-wide law enforcement group in the race for Broome County District Attorney.

Battisti has been endorsed by the New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association. The union represents about 6000 current and retired state troopers.

“If you can’t work with the men and women of law enforcement, how can you be successful as a district attorney?" he asked.

One of the knocks on Battisti has been his lack of experience as a prosecutor. He has worked as a private, criminal defense lawyer. However, PBA Vice President John Clark isn’t worried about that.

“Paul has been a staunch supporter of law enforcement for many years. We support that," Clark said. "Even though his criminal defense background kind of dictates otherwise. He’s been a great guy for law enforcement. We support law enforcement. As does Paul. We support Paul.”

One of Battisti’s opponents is Democrat Debra Gelson. She said she wasn’t asked to interview for the endorsement and would’ve liked that opportunity. "I really don't understand why they would give the endorsement to Mr. Battisti, particularly where he has absolutely no experience as a district attorney and it's a whole different skill set."

Libertarian Mike Korchak did not return WSKG’s request for a comment.

The winner will replace current District Attorney Steve Cornwell, who's leaving office to run for Congress.
