VESTAL, NY (WSKG) - A Broome County jail inmate died this week. This is the latest n a series of inmate deaths in recent years.
According to a release from Broome County Sheriff David Harder, the inmate appeared to suffer a medical emergency early Wednesday morning. He was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City where he died.
The inmate was only identified as a 40-year-old Binghamton man.
An autopsy was performed at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton. Sheriff Harder says that shows no trauma to the body and the cause of death was ruled natural.
A spokesperson with Harder’s office says, at this point, the sheriff won’t discuss the death further. It’s under investigation by the New York State Commission of Correction.
This incident is the latest in a series of Broome County inmate deaths. Some of which are the focus of lawsuits.
Protestors trying to bring attention to the deaths were arrested at this year’s Columbus Day Parade in Binghamton.
