VESTAL, NY (WSKG) - House Republican Whip Steve Scalise is throwing his support behind former Congresswoman Claudia Tenney as she tries to regain her house seat in New York's 22nd Congressional District.
The district covers part of the Southern Tier and Central New York, including Binghamton, Cortland and Utica.
Tenney’s campaign announced on Thursday that Scalise is endorsing her. She’s running to re-take NY-22, which she lost in 2018 to Democrat Anthony Brindisi in a close race.
Scalise has served as Republican whip since 2014. The position is responsible for getting GOP representatives to support party-backed legislation. He was one of the people shot during a Republican practice for a Congressional baseball game in 2017. The injury initially left him in critical condition.
Tenney is part of a Republican primary that includes Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell, former Congressional candidate George Phillips and educator Franklin Sager.
