Congressman Critical After Town Board Refuses To Recite Pledge of Allegiance At Meetings

ITHACA, NY (WSKG) - The Enfield, New York Town Board will no longer recite the Pledge of Allegiance at its monthly meetings, and Congressman Tom Reed is critical.

Enfield is outside of Ithaca and part of Reed’s 23rd Congressional District. It has a population of about 3,500.

"Not saying the Pledge of Allegiance at a town hall meeting to me is an extreme example where folks really are out of touch, in my opinion, with what that means," said Reed.

The Republican Congressman calls Enfield's refusal to recite the Pledge an example of the "extreme liberal agenda" which is taking over Albany and the U.S. House of Representatives.

The town board's vote was not unanimous. According to the meeting's official recording, members who voted for the change were worried that the phrase “one nation under God” does not reflect a clear separation of church and state.
