Southern Tier Congressman Requests Leniency For Disgraced Republican Colleague

ITHACA, NY (WSKG) - Southern Tier Congressman Tom Reed is one of over a dozen current and former members of Congress who wrote letters in support of former western New York Congressman Chris Collins.

In October, Collins pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit securities fraud and lying to law enforcement. He resigned from Congress and is set to be sentenced on Friday.

In a letter to the judge, Reed said he wrote about Collins' work for his constituents. One example, Reed mentioned his Republican colleague's push for federal funding of a nuclear waste clean up project.

"His positive work should be brought to light also as opposed to just this negative,  situation that he is clearly needs to be held accountable for," Reed recently said.

Collins represented the 27th Congressional district which covers much of western New York outside of Buffalo. It is adjacent to Reed’s district.
