Updated: 2/1/20 – 9:27 A.M.

VESTAL, NY (WSKG) — In response to the Coronavirus, Binghamton University banned all university-funded travel to China for faculty, students, and staff. Cornell University imposed a similar ban on student travel. Cornell’s faculty will need special permission before traveling to the country*.

Binghamton University officials said anyone returning from China may be subjected to screening measures and recommend all other travelers carefully review advisories issued by U.S. agencies.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a recommendation that people avoid non-essential travel to China. The U.S. State Department urges no travel to the country*, warning travelers they should be prepared for travel restriction to be put in place with no advanced notice. The World Health Organization declared the Coronavirus a global health emergency this week.

The Corning Leader reports that Corning Inc. also banned travel to China for its employees. The paper says the company has a facility in Wuhan, considered the region where the outbreak began.

Full disclosure: Cornell University is a WSKG Underwriter.
