Reed, Cuomo Point Fingers Over Trusted Traveler Bans

ReedCuomoTTP-WEB

ITHACA, NY (WSKG) - Southern Tier Congressman Tom Reed claims he had nothing to do with the exclusion of New Yorkers from federal trusted traveler programs.

Last week, the Department of Homeland Security barred all New Yorkers from enrolling in some Trusted Traveler Programs. The programs allow members to easily cross international boundaries.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo accused Reed of asking the Trump Administration to punish New York for enacting the Green Light Law.

The law allows undocumented residents to apply for a driver’s license.

Reed said a letter to the U.S. Attorney General William Barr signed by him and five other New York Congress members asked for a constitutional review of the law.

Reed blamed Cuomo for the ban.  He said New York is the only state in the country that blocks Customs and Border Protection officials access to DMV records, without a court order.

"And that is why the New York state action was taken," Reed said. "And that is why it is only New York that has been impacted by this review."

Over a dozen states do allow undocumented residents to get driver’s licenses, and some limit federal access to DMV records.

Governor Cuomo is scheduled to meet with President Trump on Thursday to discuss the situation.
